Toyota is initiating a recall of more than 73,000 hybrid vehicles due to a critical pedestrian warning sound issue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall, citing that the affected vehicles may not emit a sufficiently loud sound when in reverse, thereby increasing the risk of injury to pedestrians.
The Recall Details
The recall specifically targets certain 2023–2025 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid models.
Affected Vehicles
A total of 73,528 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles are impacted by this recall effort. Despite the broad scope of the recall, Toyota estimates that only about 1% of these vehicles are likely to actually exhibit the defect.
The Safety Concern
The core issue lies with the vehicle's pedestrian warning system. According to the NHTSA, "The vehicles may fail to make sufficient pedestrian warning sounds when in reverse." This deficiency makes it harder for pedestrians to detect the vehicle's presence, particularly when backing up, which could lead to an increased risk of accidents and injuries.
The agency further stated that these vehicles "fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 141, 'Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles.'" This standard mandates specific sound levels for hybrid and electric vehicles to ensure pedestrian safety, especially at low speeds where engine noise is minimal or absent.
Recall Identification Numbers
The specific recall numbers associated with this action are 26TB08 and 26TA08.
The Fix
To rectify the problem, Toyota dealers will perform a software update on all affected vehicles. This service will be provided free of charge to vehicle owners. The software update is designed to ensure that the pedestrian warning sounds meet the necessary regulatory standards and are audible enough to alert those in the vehicle's vicinity.
Owner Notification
Owners of the affected Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles can expect to receive official notification letters alerting them to the safety risks and the steps required for repair. These letters are anticipated to be mailed out by May 30, 2026.
Broader Context of Automotive Recalls
This recall comes amidst other significant automotive safety actions. Recently, Toyota also recalled more than 144,000 Lexus vehicles over a rearview camera failure risk. Additionally, Ford has initiated a recall of over 254,000 SUVs due to various software issues. These ongoing recalls underscore the automotive industry's continuous efforts to address and rectify safety concerns in modern vehicles.
